Wholesale Bakery

Customer Profile

Operates 52 bakeries throughout the United States. Nationwide wholesaler of family favorite products. Delivers to more than 200,000 food outlets and approximately 1,100 company-operated thrift stores.

Situation

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration required that effective January 1, 2006; all food manufacturers had to disclose the trans fat content of their products in the standard product nutritional information.  OAKLEAF anticipated their client would not be able to work off all non-compliant packaging inventory by the January 1 deadline.  The client’s packaging ranged from plastic bags for bread and rolls, to paperboard boxes for pies and pastries, to cardboard boxes for shipping case-quantities of products.  With this in mind, OAKLEAF created a way to recycle this inventory and maximize the scrap value returned to the client.

Solution

  • Identified which of the client’s 45 plants had quantities of obsolete packaging that were cost-effective to recycle.
  • Tapped into its vast nationwide network of hauling and recycling partners to secure the best overall cost for each of the 45 locations.
  • Collected and recycled over 700,000 pounds of packaging material, which included low-density polyethylene, polypropylene, paperboard and corrugated cardboard.

Working Towards Zero

For The Bottom Line
As a result of these steps the client received approximately $96,000 in net revenue.

For The Environment
The client reduced their environmental waste and transformed a potentially costly obstacle into a green opportunity.
