Pallets and wood waste reuse
Many wooden packaging and transport platforms that would otherwise be discarded have the potential to be reused in their original form. Reuse can occur either internally within a business or outside through another company. One example of internal reuse would be taking a crate built to transport a product from one plant to another, and returning it to the source plant rather than disposing of it at the receiving plant.
An external reuse would be to sell that same crate to a different company that could then use it to ship a different type of product or component. Local external reuse opportunities are often more cost-effective than internal ones. Transportation packaging, such as crates and pallets, are among the more common items with opportunities for reuse. Waste Management can facilitate reuse by identifying which items in the waste stream have potential for reuse, working with the client to create collection and storage procedures and then to end-users. Wood waste or wood pallets too damaged to be reused can be dismantled for components to repair pallets, or chipped to create mulch and compost products.
Through informed analysis and partnering with clients to create cost-effective solutions, Waste Management can reduce wood wastes and create savings while contributing to greater sustainability for transportation packaging.
